Exhibition video Uwe Kowski & Maix Mayer // Galerie EIGEN + ART Leipzig
Music by Paul Ott
With Uwe Kowski and Maix Mayer, Galerie EIGEN + ART is pleased to present two important positions of our gallery in dialogue.
We have a long, shared history with both Leipzig-born artists: our collaboration began back in the early 1990s. At that time, Uwe Kowski had his first solo exhibitions at the gallery with Paintings and Sculptures and Maix Mayer with Die Jagd (The Hunt). The special constellation in which both show their works as part of a double exhibition had its forerunner in 1993 with Time Travellers at the Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte in Switzerland.
Today, 31 years after their last duo exhibition, we are delighted to once again juxtapose the latest works of both artists in a field of tension between painting and video art, drawing and photography.
[...] Uwe Kowski's (*1963) works allow us to have sensory experiences that lead us into border regions, thereby opening up new perspectives and poetically stimulating our imagination and thinking.
With Kowski, everything is open-ended. This permeability of boundaries points to a transcendence, a beyond, not in a religious sense, but rather in a sense that seeks true realisation. It is these gaps in between that show a longing for freedom. [...]
Text extract from Dr. Marlon Metzen
Maix Mayer's (*1960) multimedia installation Halluzination, developed for the show in Leipzig, consists of 7 double arrangements. They evoke different connections or relationships between image & sign or object & sound, which exhibit characteristics of visual and concrete poetry. In the process, narrative connections are dissolved and new, unstable narratives are constructed. Maix Mayer gives visitors an active role in the appropriation of the exhibition route by asking them to create their own temporal interpretation of the titles (numerical codes). This can, for example, relate to measured or perceived time, which can be assigned to waiting, perceiving or dreaming.
