Birgit Brenner & Ricarda Roggan
Duo exhibition
Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin
13 March – 19 April 2025

We are excited to announce the duo exhibition by Birgit Brenner & Ricarda Roggan, opening in our Berlin gallery on Thursday, 13 March. It is the first time that the film works of the two artists are presented together - taking different but complementary looks at our society

In a rapid sequence of images, the current stop-motion film Better Than Tomorrow by Birgit Brenner shows a kind of time travel through the history of technology from the early 20th century to the digital present. It is divided into five acts that run backwards like a countdown. Inspired by two texts by the philosopher and speed theorist Paul Virilio - Krieg und Kino (1986) and Rasender Stillstand (1990) - Brenner deals with the profound interaction between technological progress, media seduction and their effects on human perception. She takes the question of the consequences of these developments for humanity to an extreme, visually to a point where the last bit of orientation seems to be lost.

The film Protokoll Stadt N by Ricarda Roggan reflects the ambivalence of modernity and the promise of happiness that this era held for people. With a clear, organized formal language, the time of modernism promised progress, socialism and peace. Roggan's film documents the impressions of a young typing technician using photographic material taken between 1996 and 1998. Her journey takes her through the remnants of the new world that once manifsted progress and prosperity. It is a look at what is left of the promise of modernization: a landscape marked by ruins and destroyed industry.

In addition to these films, new art works by both artists will be on display.
