With a fine tradition of presenting group exhibitions including all artist of the Gallery EIGEN + ART, we would like to present to you the latest summer exhibition „Sommer bei EIGEN + ART". In our yearly group exhibition the artists generally follow an explicitly selected theme, referring to his or her own, individual realization of a given subject. In the past and in this year, our group exhibitions are set to be a group project among the artist, which highlights their substantial artistic scope and draws attention to the diversity in artistic interpretation regarding to the artwork of each individual artist.
This exhibition reveals the variety of utilized forms of media and different subject matters the artists of the gallery dealt with. Birgit Brenner, who teaches at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, has created the first installation of the exhibition "ich bin nicht zärtlich ". The large-size installation of Birgit Brenner combines text messages, images and photos, arranged in several collages, which are merging to one piece. The familiar use regarding the linkage of communication between stage setting or film is an essential device for her documentation of society on a day to day basis. Another appendage to the implementation of political, social and historical subjects can be found in the artwork of the Hungarian artist Akos Birkas. Journalistic photos are used as a foundation to his contemporary work and the examination with the zeitgeist or individual communicative matters. Another artist, who concentrates on our future's society of the year 2099, is Carsten Nicolai. His installations "Message 2099" needs to be understood as an acoustic ‘message in a bottle', which has conserved sound recordings of more than two years for the future. The video stills by Rémy Markowitsch expound the problems of the confrontation of the industrial and handcraft made products at a very high standard. The title of the video "Miu Miu! Strip! Strip" is referring to Russ Meyers famous low-budget production "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill". Furthermore the artistic unicum is questioned by Olaf Nicolai's installation of offset prints. The sculptural installation of the self constituted ‘Dokumentararchäologe' (documentary archaeologists) Jörg Herold, refers to his own actions, movies, installation and drawing as a result of
For the first time since his presentation of works on paper, in the Albertina in Vienna in 2004, Neo Rauch also presents selected drawings in an exhibition. The drawings are presenting his work with all the complex identity of his paintings on a Din A 4 format. Time Eitel's painting, which was exclusively made for this group exhibition, can be linked to his series of small sized paintings, which are currently exhibited in Roverto. His painting "Hand" clarifies that Tim Eitel, who's solo exhibition is presently running at the Kunsthalle Brandts, has found a way to present and create powerful paintings, to which the format of the painting itself is no longer relevant. After concentrating entirely on photography in his exhibition "die Armen" in the Kunsthalle Mannheim, Martin Eder decided to contribute a painting to this group exhibition. Collections of Martin Eder's paintings are going to be shown in a solo exhibition of the Staatliche Kunstsammlung Dresden, in the gallery Neue Meister to which a catalogue is going to be produced.
In addition to the installations, the media and paintings, our artists also included photography in this year's group exhibition. Ricarda Roggan is presenting artwork, taken from her serial ‚Garage', which runs parallel to her solo exhibition in the Kunstwerke Berlin. The photos of Maix Mayer were taken during a working stay in India in 2007. Maix Mayer's work shows constructions of the architect Le Corbusier in Chandigarh, who designed those buildings in 1951 for the new capital of Punjab. The in the course of a film production generated series. It is following the concept of his previous works and highlights the confrontation of the link between the history of architecture and the present.Photos of the series Nyima by the Swiss artist Annelies Strba are also going to be shown.
Christine Hill, who is the owner of the Volksboutique at the Documenta X and who's artwork also contributed to the Italian pavilion at the 52nd Biennale in Venice, presents a series of drawings at "Sommer at EIGEN + ART". At the 52nd Biennale, another of our female artists, Yehudit Sasportas, presented her work as a solo exhibition the in the Israeli pavilion. Her drawings of landscapes, which vary from natural to constructed artificiality, can be seen in her solo exhibition "the Laboratory" at the Kunstverein Braunschweig. During an internship of the Villa Massimo, Matthias Weischer created a series of drawings, which are dominated by motives of various landscapes. In addition the work of Matthias Weischer is presently exhibited in the CAC Malage, followed by an exhibition in the Kunsthalle Mainz.
The entire group exhibition is based on the idea of creating of a substantial and updated picture of the artwork of each individual artist of the gallery.
Future exhibitions of the gallery EIGEN + ART in Berlin are going to be solo exhibitions of Uwe Kowski, who's work can is currently exhibited in the Kunsthalle Emden, followed by another solo exhibition of David Schnell. In Leipzig, the current exhibition of Stella Hamberg is going to be followed by the new film "spelling Dystopia" by Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani.
