SOUTH AFRICA

As early as 2019, Galerie EIGEN + ART started building contacts in South Africa for exhibitions. Since then, we have been in intensive exchange with numerous artists and curators as well as with institutions, galleries and museums in and around Cape Town.

Here are some selected projects from the last few years:

In 2020 we took part in the Investec Cape Town Art Fair in Cape Town for the first time and used this opportunity not only to introduce artists from our program, but also to get to know new artists on site. Building on this, we are still a regular at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair – in 2024, in addition to the stand in the main part of the fair, also with a solo presentation by Natalie Paneng in the Tomorrows / Today section.

As a result of these many encounters, we showed the exhibition Space and Place in the Leipzig gallery in summer 2021, supported and accompanied by the curator Khan Mashabela. On display were works by European and South African artists such as Louisa Clement, Ian Grose, Igor Hosnedl, Gabrielle Kruger, Sepideh Mehraban, Lotte Meret, Thandiwe Msebenzi, Adrian Mudder, Asemahle Ntlonti, Natalie Paneng, Madeleine Roger-Lacan, Brett Charles Seiler, Elene Shatberashvili, Hanna Stiegeler and Xhanti Zwelendaba.

With Space and Place Vol. 2, the project continued after the end of the pandemic in February 2022 as a pop-up show parallel to the trade fair in Cape Town, followed by the exhibitions under-water-love (2023) and Resilience: Pleasure & Self-care in a Precarious World (2024), curated by Thuli Mlambo-James. We want to continue this series of pop-up shows in the future and show European and South African artists.

At our fourth participation in the fair in Cape Town in February 2024, in addition to artists from our gallery program, we also presented the Cape Town artists Gabrielle Kruger and Brett Charles Seiler as well as the Johannesburg-based artist Natalie Paneng for the first time.

Since autumn 2021, we have successfully represented the South African artist Brett Charles Seiler, whose first solo exhibition in Europe was shown in the Berlin gallery in January 2023.

Parallel to Brett Charles Seiler's solo exhibition in Berlin, we showed the group exhibition 4 x 4 at the EIGEN + ART Lab in January 2023 with works by Natalie Paneng and Asemahle Ntlonti, Githan Coopoo and Guy Simpson. In April 2024, Thuli Mlambo-James will curate a group exhibition with the following artists from South Africa at the EIGEN + ART Lab: Nyakallo Maleke, Sethembile Msezane, Slindile Mthembu, Thandiwe Msebenzi and Cazlynne Peffer.

In close exchange with the art scene in Cape Town, we look forward to continuing these collaborations and consistently expanding our program.
